Canada is entirely correct to close its embassy in Tehran and expel all Iranian diplomatic personnel from our country, as it did on Friday. Embassies and diplomatic corps are tools that permit civilized nations to conduct international relations in an orderly manner. But there is nothing to discuss with Iran: It is a warmongering rogue nation, a state supporter of terrorism (and now designated as such under Canadian law), a peddler of anti-Semitic hate, and a prop to the butchers of Syria.
Other nations should follow Canada’s example. The time may not yet be ripe for dropping bombs on Iran. But the time for dropping the courtesies of diplomatic relations has long past.
