Since Premier Dalton McGuinty made his surprise resignation two weeks ago, there has been much speculation about who might take his place. Glen Murray became the first candidate to officially announce his bid on Sunday. National Post reporter Armina Ligaya spoke with the Toronto Centre MPP about his platform and why he decided to step forward now.
Q Was it your intent to be first?
A No. I had a couple of pieces that I had to make sure was in place. Most imporatantly, my family’s support. Because this was not just a commitment for me, I have a partner, a family. And they had to be prepared to support me. Number two, was organization and money. And I wasn’t looking for much support from the benches. I was looking for support from grassroots Liberals, and there were at least a couple of hundred grassroots Liberals who were out there supporting me. Within a week of the premier resigning, it came together quite quickly. I had long thought about as a cabinet minister the kinds of things the government could be doing.
Q Did you ruffle any feathers of other potential candidates by going first?
