I think it is fairly obvious at this point onwards that as a project in itself, its no longer viable to continue development of compiz. Lots of people still use it though, so its is worth maintaining for those that use it, but nothing more than that.

Looking forward to a post-X11 world, and a post-desktop world in the near future, I’ve been personally questioning the need for yet another window manager and system compositor. With wayland, we are lucky in that right now that we only have weston as the more or less de-facto compositor and window manager. This means that we don’t have to worry about messy specifications on how things should work, but instead we just have an interface that exists in the code between the window manager and the clients.
