OTTAWA — Police are investigating how the elderly victim of a home invasion ended up spending 75 days in jail after he called 911.

Marian Andrzejewski was beaten by two thugs after they burst through the door of his 14th-floor public housing unit in October 2010.

As he begged for his life, they punched him repeatedly in the head, and left him bloodied and in pain.

Mr. Andrzejewski, 74, a Polish-born painter whose work has been featured at the Canadian War Museum, managed to call 911, telling the operator he needed help.

The call, a transcript of which was obtained by the Ottawa Citizen, lasted 13 minutes, much of it an exercise in frustration for Mr. Andrzejewski, whose first language is Polish.

The operator seemed to have sensed his frustration, telling him at one point to “take a deep breath.”

Even so, it took her more than three minutes…
