Iranian diplomat’s removal from Ottawa embassy questioned

An Iranian diplomat is said to have left Canada after being quietly removed from his post at the Ottawa embassy, even before allegations emerged this month that the Islamic regime is using its mission here to monitor the activities of Iranian-Canadians.

One embassy employee told the National Post that political attaché Hassan Doutaghi no longer works at the Iranian mission and that he has left the country, while a second employee said only he is not in Canada anymore.


A source in Ottawa’s Iranian-Canadian community who has knowledge of the embassy’s inner workings said Mr. Doutaghi was asked to leave in the spring. An unidentified man who answered the phone at the embassy this week called any suggestion embassy staff were involved in espionage “baseless.”
