LONDON, Ont. — The mayor of London, Ont., who is facing criminal charges in a fraud investigation stemming from his time as a federal cabinet minister, says he will remain in office.

Joe Fontana was charged Wednesday with fraud under $5,000, breach of trust by a public official and uttering forged documents.

Fontana told reporters in London today that he’s innocent and intends to fight to clear his name.

He said that he understands “the anguish, pain, frustration and anger” that has been caused by this incident, but intends to complete his mandate.

There have been calls for Fontana to temporarily step aside as mayor pending the outcome of the RCMP investigation.

Fontana told reporters he’s only stepping down from the city’s police services board.

His lawyer, Gord Cudmore, says he’s advised his client not to comment on the charges.
