The city’s budget committee has resurrected the debate on tearing down a portion of the Gardiner Expressway after councillors expressed hesitation over a plan to pour $505-million into fixing the aging roadway.
Councillor John Parker won support for a motion on Tuesday that asked transportation staff to outline the minimum repairs necessary to maintain the section east of Jarvis Street until an environmental study on removing that portion is complete.
“We are proposing to put a lot of money into keeping the east end of the Gardiner standing,” said Councillor Parker. “The last I heard it was still an open question as to whether that was a section of roadway we wanted to keep.” He wants an answer to that question before he signs off on the kind of long-term restoration that is proposed.
