New York — A surrogate mother fled across the United States when the couple whose baby she was carrying demanded she have an abortion after discovering the child would be severely disabled.
Crystal Kelley, 30, learned five months into her pregnancy that the girl’s disabilities would include a cleft lip and palate, a cyst in her brain and heart defects.
The intended parents said they no longer wanted the child and told Ms. Kelley she should have an abortion, saying it was “more humane.” They even offered her $10,000 to end the pregnancy.
But Ms. Kelley, who does not believe in abortion, refused. The couple then said they would take the child and put her into foster care.
The surrogate, who was to be paid $22,000 for the pregnancy, also opposed this proposal.
