If I’m reading the pundits correctly, there is a common theme connecting the denouement of the Liberal leadership “race” this weekend, and the three-day new Democratic Party policy conference taking place in Montreal.
The connection is niceness. Justin Trudeau will be crowned king of the Liberal domain, such as remains of it, based to a considerable degree on his saleability as a decent bloke. Young, handsome, attractive wife, nice kids, can dance a bit, really cares. Has no policies other than a few broad strokes, but is willing to listen. And learn. As Brian Mulroney mused, “He’s young, articulate, attractive – a flawlessly bilingual young man. What’s not to like with this picture?”
