To quote the magnificent words uttered just a few days ago by the Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, “This is our f—-ing city, and nobody gonna dictate our freedom.”

Make that our train station and our passenger rail service, and you pretty much have in a nutshell the targets of the latest alleged terror plot foiled by the RCMP.

Union Station and Via Rail, in other words, and if neither is quite what she used to be, they remain fading but stirring links to this enormous country built and for a long time held together, in that tenuous and often iffy Canadian way, by the railway.

The arrests Monday of Chiheb Esseghaier, a 30-year-old living in Montreal and Raed Jaser, 35, of Toronto, were announced at a dramatic press conference.

While frugal with details of the alleged plot, the RCMP did say that the pair had narrowed things…
