Iran’s leaders have never shied away from supporting terrorism. Israelis living within range of Hezbollah and Hamas rockets, many provided by Iran (and according to some reports, operated by Iranian troops), can attest to that.
But Canadians should listen to the RCMP’s assurances that the two men arrested Monday in a plot to attack a VIA train in Canada were receiving support from al Qaeda operatives inside Iran, but not the Iranian government itself. Blowing up trains in North America isn’t how Tehran does business.
Yes, Tehran is a state sponsor of terror. Its Revolutionary Guards are specifically tasked with assisting Islamic (more accurately, Islamist) groups all over the world. But Iran is also a generally rational state actor. While its leaders often speak in language calculated to warm the jihadist’s heart, their geopolitical goals are fairly conventional.
