The RCMP-led national security enforcement team expects to make more arrests in the VIA Rail train bombing plot.
The two men arrested Monday — Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, of Montreal, and 35-year-old Raed Jaser of Toronto — aren’t only alleged terror suspects, but also allegedly keen extremist recruiters with associates in other countries, Postmedia sources say.
In fact, the finale of the year-long operation — the arrests and simultaneous execution of search warrants in the two Canadian cities — was delayed multiple times, the sources say.
“It’s not a question of ‘Why now?’” one source said, “but “Why did we wait until now to move?’”
So often was the actual takedown of Mr. Eesseghaier and Mr. Jaser postponed that the task force’s wiretap authorizations several times expired, with the RCMP having to seek judicial approval for extensions.
