An exasperated Peter MacKay labelled the NDP “a joke” in question period Wednesday after a heated debate over danger pay cuts for Canadian soldiers in northern Afghanistan.
After opposition critic Jack Harris attacked the defence minister for not intervening to ensure soldiers in Mazar-i-Sharif receive the same danger pay as soldiers in Kabul, MacKay fired back by questioning NDP support of the Canadian Forces.
“Mr. Speaker, he has his facts wrong on the history of the Liberal defence spending, just like his colleague from Quebec has his facts wrong on what happened in Vimy Ridge,” MacKay said to raucous applause from his side of the House. “The NDP are a joke.”
MacKay was referring to a six-year-old blog post by NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice, in which the politician criticized the First World War and called it “a capitalist” fight.
