Accused Mansion Squatter Fires Lawyers, Walks Away From Plea Deal

CBS Denver

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) – A man accused of squatting in a million dollar mansion he didn’t own was supposed to be sentenced Wednesday in Douglas County but there was an unexpected twist.

At the last moment Sergio Hernandez fired his public defenders, walking away from a plea deal and past CBS4 cameras.

CBS4 was there when Hernandez was evicted and charged with felony trespassing last year.

On Wednesday Hernandez filed a motion saying he wasn’t informed how a guilty plea would affect his immigration status. But then he told the judge he was in fact a U.S. citizen. At that point the judge sternly asked, “Are you lying to me?”

Hernandez left court in a car with Alfonso Carrillo, who is scheduled to be in a Denver court Thursday to face organized crime charges. He’s accused of stealing homes across the Front Range.
