It was more mea than culpa but Stephen Harper finally expressed some contrition for the scandal that has engulfed his government.
Speaking in Lima, Peru, Mr. Harper said Wednesday he is “very sorry this has occurred … I’m sorry, I’ve been through the range of emotions, I’m frustrated and I’m extremely angry about it,” he said.
At the same time, he made clear he accepts no responsibility for the actions carried out by his chief of staff, Nigel Wright, who wrote the $90,000 cheque to cover Senator Mike Duffy’s expenses. “He [Wright] is solely responsible and that’s why he resigned … I did not know, was not consulted or asked to sign off. Had I known about it, I wouldn’t have signed off on it.” The buck, it seems, stops somewhere near the Prime Minister’s desk but not on it.
