Amazon picks first five TV shows


Amazon has commissioned the first five shows of its ambitious TV project and will start streaming them from later this year.

Comedies Alpha House and Betas will join kids programmes Annebots, Creative Galaxy, and Tumbleaf to be broadcast exclusively on LOVEFiLM in the UK.

The shows beat nine other pilots being considered by Amazon Studios, based in Seattle, with LOVEFiLM and Prime Instant Video users in the US casting votes.

The move follows rival streaming service Netflix commissioning its own original content, including political drama House of Cards at a reported cost over $100 million (£65m).

Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios, says: ‘We are thrilled at the enthusiastic customer response to our first original pilots.
