CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – The NFL is cracking down on celebrations this season but not eliminating them all together.
The league is looking to eliminate the taunting of opponents with players directing celebrations at them.
Sack dances, the home run swing, incredible hulk, spiking the ball, throwing or shoving the ball, pointing, pointing the ball, military salute and dancing in the direction of an opponent will result in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
It was widely reported that the celebrations would be completely banned but that’s not the case.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy tweeted a clarification of the new rules Wednesday, “to clear up bad info re: td celebrations like military salute/spinning ball: only flagged if player does it directly @ opponent.”
So in essence, Trent Richardson can continue to salute the dawg pound when he scores. He just better not do it in the direction of a defender…
