One hundred of Britain’s best-loved pubs are being spared the bulldozer as communities club together to try to stem the dozens of weekly closures.
As the number of beloved boozers on the assets of community value list hit three figures, campaigners have hailed the scheme which allows residents to bid on those put up for sale.
Neil Walker from the Campaign for Real Ale said that at least four had already been bought by their community.
He added: ‘It’s a safeguard for the future, even if the pub is not in danger at the moment, and it puts communities in a really strong position.’
The scheme was introduced protect pubs suffering the impact of the smoking ban and supermarket competition.
Camra hopes to get 300 pubs on the list, but wants a change in the law which allows pubs to become shops or supermarkets without planning permission.
