Billionaire oligarch Boris Berezovsky ‘died with £309million of debt’

He was once one of the richest men in the world but fallen Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky was as much as £309million in debt when he died, the High Court heard.

The 67-year-old entrepreneur’s estate may have been insolvent at the time of his ‘tragic and mysterious’ death, although this point is being disputed by his daughter, Ekaterina Berezovskaya.

Receivers who analysed his finances said the businessman’s £1.9billion wealth had disappeared, especially after losing his legal case against former ally and Chelsea FC chairman, Roman Abramovich.

However, his daughter’s lawyer, Anthony Trace QC, told the London court that the investigation was inadequate as there were a ‘number of things’ the receivers hadn’t done.

Judge Mr Justice Morgan put Ms Berezovskaya in ‘limited’ control of her father’s estate, which includes the Berkshire mansion where he was found dead in March with a ligature around his neck.
